SCUBA divers who have owned & used both: Which is better and why – a regular mask or one with a purge?
First off, one that actually fits you properly. Everything else is secondary.
Between the two, I’ve dived the same mask, one with purge and one without. An Ocean Master Q.
My experience with a purge is that it’s just a toy you pay a little extra money for that will eventually fail. Gunk gets in the disk causing it to leak or the actual disk fails. You’re taught how to clear a mask. It requires one hand. Even using a purge, chances are, that hand will come up anyway to keep the mask against your face as you blow so it’s not going to free up a hand for something else.
A waste of money on something that will fail eventually. You should be keeping things simple, not complicating matters. A good case of the KISS principle in action.
